Do I actually need a sports bra?

Sports bras: the most important questions and answers

I've often asked myself the question before doing sport: Do I really need a sports bra? I'm not the biggest sportswoman, but every now and then I do go out into nature for yoga or a jog. But I don't need a sports bra just for that little bit of exercise. Especially not for my smaller breasts. Think again!

Why do you need a sports bra?

Your breasts are in motion with every little activity and bounce happily - when walking, running and jumping. Breasts bounce up and down when you walk. It looks fascinating in slow motion. Why not film yourself doing it 😉

This swinging - also known as "bouncing" - can lead to tension in the neck and back muscles in the long term if you have medium to large breasts. The larger the breast, the higher the risk of stretch marks or tears in the subcutaneous tissue. These stretch marks can be caused by the bounce effect. And as we know, once the tears in the tissue are there, they are not so easy to get rid of.

If you wear a sports bra, you can minimize the swinging movement of the breasts. This protects the skin of the breasts and the connective tissue also benefits from a supportive sports bra. Why? Too much stretching and traction can cause connective tissue, tendons and ligaments to wear out - which leads to sagging breasts more quickly. This is because the breast consists largely of fat, glandular and connective tissue and is therefore dependent on external support.

Which sports bra is right for you?

This depends on your breast shape, your breast size and the nature of your connective tissue. A sports bra is generally recommended for all sizes. It gives you the support you need without constricting. Then there is another selection criterion: your type of sport. For lighter sports such as yoga or Pilates, a sports bra with little support is sufficient, for marathons or horse riding you need strong support - we call it maximum support. At Anita active, every woman will find the right sports bra. Anita active offers you a large selection of different cuts - from cup size AA to K cup and underbust size 105.

What should you consider when choosing a sports bra?

When trying on a bra, make sure that the fabric is comfortable and does not scratch. A good sports bra should also be made from a breathable material and have wide straps. Now to the fit: the bra should feel comfortable, it should fit tightly but not cut off the air. The cups should not wrinkle, but the breast should not bulge out of the cup. Everything must be well packed. When you move now, your breasts should stay in the bra. When you stretch your arms up, the chest band should not slip and everything should stay in place. Make sure that the underbust band runs horizontally around the body. The back should sit slightly below the shoulder blades.

And once the work is done, it's off to the washing machine. However, follow the washing instructions. Sports bras can usually be washed at up to 40 degrees. Please avoid fabric softener and ironing. And another tip for real washing pros: use laundry bags so that you can enjoy your new sports companion for as long as possible.

Best regards

Franziska
